Your test for Chapter 1 is scheduled for Friday, September 1st. To post questions you have over the material for Chapter 1, click on the "comments" link below. I will answer the questions as they are posted, so check back often. Questions posted after 10pm the night before the test may not get answered in time. To avoid the same question being posted more the once, read through the comments before posting your own. Thanks!

Let me explain the three perspectives...
Remember that a perspective is just a way to look at things. In sociology we have three different ways to look at society.

The original view was funcationalism. Functionalists beleive that we should study the big picture...that all things in society serve a purpose, or function. They would focus on how everything works together in society.

Conflict perspective also focuses on the big picture, but it is the opposite of functionalism. Conflict theorists believe that the study of society should focus on how aspects of society work against one another. Conflict theorist focus on competition and change.

Symbolic Interactionism focuses on studying society on a smaller scale. SI focuses on the study of interactions among people. People communicate through the use of language (which is a series of symbols). That's why it's called SI.

Hope this helps!
